SHRI KUMAR SHAHANI

Who has acclaimed and won many National and International awards for
his realure Rims. ·Maya Darpan’ (1972), ‘Tarang’ (1984), ‘Khayal Catha’
(1989), and many short Rims including ‘Shavantarana’, on the life and
dance of Guru Kclucharan Mahapatra, the legendary exponent of Odissi.
Kumar Shahani was bom on 7th ))«ember 1940 in Larkana
(Sindh) in Hyderabadi Amil Family.!His father’s name was Rai Bahadur
Topandas and mother’s name was Devi. Aftcr panition of the country,
the family migrated to Mumbai. Shahani graduated in Political Science
and history in 1962. He joined Film and Television Institute of India at
Pune, and got diploma in Advanced Direction in 1966, standing first on
both the occasions.
‘Maya Darpan’, his first feature film, released in 1972. received Best
Hindi Fi lm Award. Film fair Critic’s Award. Dada Sahcb Phalke
Award. Locamo lnter-national Jury’s Special Mention for Courage and
Rigour-1973. Mansell Stimpson a critic commented in ‘Film’, (British
Federation of film Societies – April 1973) “The most outstanding work of
the season was our introduction 10the work of Kumar Shahani. His
Maya Darpan superbly and sensitively photographed in colour marks
him out as the most talented director to appear since $atyajit Ray. If
