CM Reddy claimed that there is a possibility of the representation of southern states in Lok Sabha seats falling from 24 per cent to 19 per cent if delimitation is carried out on a population basis
The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday adopted a unanimous resolution asserting that population should not be the sole yardstick for the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies.
Moving the resolution in the state assembly, chief minister A Revanth Reddy said if the proposed delimitation exercise is carried out on population basis, there is a possibility of the representation of southern states in Lok Sabha seats falling from 24 per cent to 19 per cent.
“The southern states implemented family planning strictly and they will be at the receiving end if the delimitation is done on a population basis,” he said.
The resolution adopted said that there should be transparent consultations with stakeholders for the delimitation exercise.

It urged the central government that the states which have effectively implemented the population control program pushed by the Centre, and consequently whose population share has come down, should not be penalized.
“Hence, population should not be the sole yardstick for delimitation,” it said.
He also demanded that the number of seats in the Telangana state assembly should be immediately increased from 119 to 153 pursuant to the A P Reorganization Act, 2014.
“This House urges the Union government to introduce necessary Constitutional amendments for this purpose,” the resolution said.
He pointed out that the Centre had amended the Constitution and increased the number of assembly constituencies from 83 to 90 as per the 2011 census in Jammu and Kashmir.
In Sikkim, a resolution was passed in the Cabinet in 2018 and the process of delimitation of constituencies is being continued.
The chief minister announced that the Congress government in Telangana will soon hold a meeting with all parties led by deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and senior leader K Jana Reddy to discuss the delimitation issue.
