Seven people were killed due to an explosion at a firecracker factory in an industrial area Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place at a unit located near Deesa town. Fire service personnel were present on the area to carry out rescue operations on Tuesday afternoon.
Sub Divisional Magistrate Neha Panchal said that several people were trapped as a blast at the site led to a fire and collapsed a part of the building.
Banaskantha Collector Mihir Patel said, “Today morning, we got information of a large explosion in the industrial area in Deesa. The Fire Department rushed to the site and controlled the fire. Five workers died on the spot of the incident. Four injured workers were referred to different hospitals. The explosion was so huge that the slab of the factory collapsed. We are conducting a search operation to rescue any person who might be buried under debris.”
Banaskantha Superintendent of Police Akshayraj Makwana said that operations are underway to rescue those who are suspected to be trapped under debris. A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was also present at the site to assist operations.
