A new video has surfaced showing students leaping from a building at a medical college in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where an Air India plane crashed last week.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, crashed into the BJ Medical College complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39pm on June 12.
Of the 242 people on board the London-bound flight, 241 were killed. Miraculously, one passenger survived. The crash also claimed the lives of 29 people on the ground, including five MBBS students.
In the latest video, students are seen climbing over balcony railings and attempting to descend as flames engulf the lower floors of the BJ Medical College hostel — believed to have been caused by the impact of the crashing aircraft.
This is among the several videos that have emerged of the deadly plane crash. On Monday, a fresh video captured sole survivor Vishwash Kumar Ramesh walking out of the crash site amid a thick cloud of smoke has also gone viral on social media.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 45-year-old British national of Indian origin, whose tale of survival has left the world in disbelief.
135 victims have so far been identified
So far, 135 victims have been identified through DNA matching and 101 bodies handed over to their families, news agency PTI reported, citing unnamed officials.
Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged.
“Till Tuesday morning, 135 DNA samples have been matched, and 101 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. Of these 101 deceased, five were not on board the flight,” Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi told reporters.
The 101 deceased whose mortal remains have been handed over to their relatives belonged to different parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan and Diu, he added.
The last rites of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who also lost his life in the Air India plane crash, were performed with full state honours on Monday in Rajkot.
The former CM was cremated by his son Rushabh Rupani.
Top political leaders attended the funeral ceremony, including Union home minister Amit Shah, Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat, and chief minister Bhupendra Patel, who paid their final respects to the departed leader.
